Michael grew up with everything he needed—except the truth. When he discovered his aunt was actually his mother, the foundation of his world shifted. As a teenager, he followed her to Alaska, then Hawaii, chasing something that felt like freedom. But freedom unraveled into chaos, and when his father died, Michael had no way to process the grief. Substance use followed. Then incarceration. Then the streets.

For years, Michael moved between tents, hotels, and friends' couches—untethered and uncertain about the future.

Then he met Frankie.

A small, deaf dog who had spent more than six months in a shelter—abandoned, overlooked, waiting. Their connection was immediate. Frankie didn't just become Michael's companion; he became his reason to keep going.

Together, they found their way to Labath Landing, one of HomeFirst's interim housing communities. With a safe place to sleep, supportive staff, and access to skill-building workshops, Michael began to heal. Today, he volunteers with a local outreach team, cares for his mother, and is working with his case manager toward permanent housing—with Frankie always by his side.
