Ubaldo's Move to Make a Home

In 2021, Ubaldo's life unraveled all at once. A serious on-the-job injury forced him out of work. A relationship ended, taking with it his home and his support system. Left with nowhere to turn, he found himself homeless—not alone, but with his two young children by his side.

For a time, the three of them lived in his car. It wasn't safe, and Ubaldo knew it. He eventually purchased an RV to give his son and daughter a more stable place to sleep, but the weight of their situation was crushing. Without a home, without his health, and without a partner, life felt impossible. There were moments when Ubaldo wasn't sure he wanted to go on.

That's when HomeFirst entered his life.

Referred to our Emergency Housing Voucher program, Ubaldo was paired with a case manager who became a steady, trusted guide through one of the most stressful periods of his life—navigating custody paperwork, searching for housing, and completing the applications that would open the door to something stable. Within six months of enrollment, Ubaldo had a permanent home.

Today, he lives in a two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment and he is thriving. His kids have space of their own. His dog, who never left his side during the hardest years, has room to run around. He has a washer, dryer, and a kitchen where he can explore his love of cooking. Importantly, his health is better, he has a job, and his children are doing well.

Ubaldo has said it simply: this apartment is the best thing he has ever had.

His story is a reminder that homelessness rarely has a single cause, and the path forward isn’t linear. With the right support, at the right time, the transformation can be profound.
