A Veteran's Victory: Peter and Rita's Story

Peter, a Veteran, and his wife Rita—both seniors, were living in their car when they attended a resource fair at Roosevelt Community Park. They had been trying to connect with the VA for help, but had been unsuccessful. Overwhelmed and uncertain about their future and concerned about their health, they felt lost.

It was at the resource fair that they connected with HomeFirst. They did a pre-screening for the Supportive Services For Veteran Families (SSVF) program and learned they qualified. Finally, they were making crucial steps toward secure housing. They also won a gift card in the raffle, received a hygiene kit, and obtained much-needed clothing—Friday the 13th suddenly felt like their lucky day.

With the help of HomeFirst, Peter and Rita were placed in SSVF's Emergency Housing Program, allowing them to stay in a hotel instead of their car. With emergency shelter established, they worked with their case manager to finalize the needed paperwork for permanent housing. Less than a month after connecting with HomeFirst, Peter and Rita had a place to call home. And, thanks to the generosity of HomeFirst donors, they received an Exit-to-Housing kit with all the essentials they needed.

Peter and Rita’s story is one of resilience, perseverance, and what is possible when the support you need comes when you need it.
